In early 2017, Bluehole Inc. reached out to me to create the logo for their new game, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG). As a gamer, I was aware of PLAYERUNKNOWN (Brendan Greene) and his popular Battle Royale game mode that he initially developed and was excited to hear that he was finally making his own game.
The main objective was cIear: to make the new PUBG logo stand out as the definitive Battle Royale game. As for the tone of the logo, it had to look fun, intense, serious and realistic. By setting the objective and tone of the project, every logo designed had to filter through these main principles to know whether they worked or not. At first, it was a challenge to design a logo with such a long title. However, the real emphasis was on the word “BATTLEGROUNDS” and “PLAYERUNKNOWN’S” was secondary which made things a lot easier on hierarchy.
The final logo fit those principles. The typeface helped make the logo feel fun and intense. The texture made the logo feel rugged and rusted which made it feel more realistic. Finally, when the color was added to the logo, it really began to feel like the definitive last-man-standing Battle Royale game. PUBG became an instant hit selling over 20 million copies in 8 months while still being in early access.
